About the project

Our Women's Empowerment Program in Tanzania provides crucial support to young women aged 13-24 who have faced significant adversity in their lives. Working through a secure shelter in Arusha, we create a safe haven for girls who have experienced homelessness, neglect, forced labor, unconsensual marriages, unwanted pregnancies, trafficking, and sexual violence. The program takes a holistic approach, focusing on breaking the cycles of poverty and violence through comprehensive education, psychological support, physical wellbeing, and social development. We provide formal education opportunities, vocational training, human rights education, and HIV/AIDS awareness to enhance employability and life skills. This Community Development initiative aims to create greater awareness around women's rights and gender equality in Tanzania. By empowering these resilient young women with knowledge, skills, and opportunities, we help them build pathways to independence and a brighter future. As a volunteer, you'll be part of a transformative journey, working directly with these young women to develop their potential and restore their confidence and dignity. Your contribution helps us sustain this vital work and expands our capacity to support more vulnerable girls in the community.

Flight and airport

Fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), the main gateway to Arusha. Airport pickup is included in your program fee – simply provide your arrival details and a staff member will meet you with a name sign. The White House team can help you find affordable flights to Tanzania. We recommend arriving at the end of the week to settle in over the weekend before starting your project on Monday.

Visa

Most visitors to Tanzania require a tourist visa, which can be obtained on arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport or applied for online before travel. Ensure your passport has at least six months validity remaining. Visa fees vary by nationality but typically cost around $50-100 USD. Your volunteering activities are permitted under a tourist visa as you're not receiving payment.

Free time

Your volunteering experience in Tanzania offers incredible opportunities for adventure and exploration during your free time! As one of the world's premier safari destinations, you'll have the chance to join budget-friendly group safaris to iconic national parks like Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara. These can be easily arranged through the White House hostel where you'll be staying. For the adventurous spirit, consider hiking excursions to Mt. Meru waterfall or more ambitious treks up Mt. Kilimanjaro or Mt. Meru itself. Cultural experiences abound with visits to authentic Masai villages where you can learn about traditional ways of life that have endured for centuries. Arusha itself offers plenty to discover – from vibrant markets perfect for souvenir shopping to museums and cultural centers. Cool off at hotel swimming pools (available for a small fee) or try yoga and meditation sessions offered locally. Many volunteers enjoy horseback riding adventures in the beautiful landscapes surrounding the city. Sundays are typically free days, allowing for day trips or relaxation. The White House hostel creates a social atmosphere where volunteers from around the world gather for communal dinners, sharing experiences and planning weekend adventures together. These connections often lead to lasting friendships and travel companions for exploring Tanzania's treasures. Whether you prefer adrenaline-pumping activities, cultural immersion, or simply unwinding in natural beauty, your free time in Tanzania will be filled with unforgettable experiences that complement your meaningful volunteer work.

A typical day

Your work day typically begins between 9am and 10am, offering flexibility to match your natural rhythm. Upon arrival at the women's shelter in Arusha, you'll check in with the local coordinator to review the day's priorities and needs. The beauty of this program lies in its diverse and largely self-selectable tasks, allowing you to contribute where your skills and passions align. Many volunteers choose to divide their time between multiple areas of the program. Mornings might find you working in the daycare facility, caring for children while their mothers participate in training programs. You could lead educational activities, assist with meal preparation, or simply provide much-needed attention and care. Alternatively, you might work directly with the women during their business development and rehabilitation sessions. This could involve teaching specific skills, helping develop business plans, or facilitating workshops on financial literacy and entrepreneurship. Educational initiatives form another core component, where you might assist with formal education in subjects like English, mathematics, or computer skills, depending on your expertise. Human rights education and gender equality awareness sessions are also vital parts of the program. Afternoons often involve more hands-on activities and one-on-one mentoring. You might help organize community events, assist with craft production for income generation, or provide individual support to women working through trauma. Before concluding your day, you'll typically have a brief debrief with staff to discuss progress and plan for the following day. Work schedules run Monday through Saturday, with Sundays free for rest or exploration. The program's structure allows you to make meaningful contributions while adapting to the evolving needs of the women and children you're supporting.
